Commercial Outdoor Furniture is pretty much exactly the same your indoor furniture; only it’s made from materials that resist weather conditions and are designed to be used roughly. Let’s understand the basics.

Outdoor furniture is indeed a bit more expensive than casual furniture for many reasons. Of course it also takes abuse really well, too.

Considerations:

One of the main factors to keep in mind while buying outdoor furniture is the fabric, that’s right. The longevity of your furniture is only really as good as its material.

In fabrics, vinyl is very commercially used because it lasts for many seasons, is fade-resistant and very durable so it works out under high factors of stresses really well and doesn’t show it, either.

The best part, fabrics are changeable at any time to suit your design and performance. Mainly, it is known for its durability and very low-maintenance requirements.

Outdoor furniture provides comfort in a decor that you choose and also adds to living spaces drastically.

Types of Commercial Outdoor Furniture

Commercial outdoor furniture is everywhere: restaurants, cafes, rec. centers, shopping malls. So in the event you’re planning on investing in some good outdoor furniture, choose the material it’s made from wisely.

The Most Popular Materials For Commercial Outdoor Furniture

Wood

Mahogany, red wood, white cedar and teak are really all-time favorites.

I came across a hard wood outdoor set of 6 chairs and a coffee table that came for $459, which is really a great deal. One great place to look for this type of furniture is your local liquidator for outdoor furniture.

Life span – 20 years, given good care and staining.

The Good: Resistant to mold, mildew and decay – so long as you do NOT buy white woods that have been stained or painted – these have significantly decreased lifespans. Save your money and deal with an honest furniture outlet. Speaking as an ex-carpenter, the fact of the matter is that wood wants to rot. Sitting out in the sun for years on end dries out the protective oils and such in the wood, and dry rot will become an issue in most white woods, even white cedar.

The Bad: Needs a Water-based stain remover wash once a month, depending upon the original finish. Look for and ask about the stains and finish your provider has selected – Cabot products are top-notch stains and sealers. Otherwise, an annual re-staining or re-sealing should be considered standard, no matter what the salesman tells you.

The Ugly: Harsh sunlight decreases its life by half and also dries out the wood. Again, a little love an care on an annual basis should take care of this.

Plastic

The least expensive type of outdoor furnishing are made from hard plastic resin. Sets typically cost $80-$100. One sturdy chair costs $3-$10.

Life Span – 6-7 years.

The Good: Resistant to water, dust, mildew. Easy to clean, no re-finishing, cheap.

The Bad: Needs a wiping or hose down every week, unless you don’t mind the layer of archaeological dust that seems to collect on your set. It is, however, easy to clean.

The Ugly: Collects dust easily, hopefully you see the pattern here, it is not the most durable, can’t take heavy usage well. If you buy a set that is deeply colored, then you will see some sun bleaching in most cases.

Aluminum

Powder-coated cast aluminum furniture is much sturdier than plastic resin or wood and has more designs, but is more expensive. An outdoor furniture set could cost $900-$1300.

Life Span – over 100 years outside…yeah, really.

The Good: It never rusts, extremely durable, takes abuse beautifully and doesn’t show it. Almost No Maintenance required.

The Bad: It can be a little heavier than you may think, a bit more expensive than other furniture.

The Ugly: Make sure there are only stainless steel rivets used or else the rivet joints corrode easily.

Wicker

Wicker is usually used in gardens since it shares similar style and elegance to cast aluminum, yet wicker is cheaper and doesn’t take abuse well.

Life Span – 7 years outside

The Good: It’s a cheap, elegant compromise to outdoor furniture, it’s light-weight.

The Bad: Not durable, brittle in harsh sunlight, not resistant to mildew and water. Re-finishing or painting is a mess and requires use of a sprayer to look right.

The Ugly: Requires a lot of water proofing, loses its shine soon, weak.

Verdict:

If Aluminum, wood, plastic and wicker were at a casino table, the aluminum would be in wearing the tux. It’s all around efficient and always ready for anything.

Yet, I would have to say, aluminum furniture can only be used in gardens, parks, or homes.

Wicker is a great affordable option to wood, but doesn’t last that long; will go great for small lawns or terraces.

Plastic furniture and clubs/rec. centers always go great together.

Restaurants and cafés share great affinity to wooden outdoor furniture, and for good reason – curb appeal. Many million-dollar plus homes in this area have wooden furniture, most of it teak or driftwood masterpieces. Definitely expensive, definitely a statement.

Plastic furniture should not be let in as domestic furniture…but if you’re on a budget, it’s a place to start and enjoy the outdoors. Plastic commercial outdoor furniture is also great for those who entertain and need a few extra spots around the pool in a hurry. Leaving it out in the sun is a bad idea over time, however, and because plastic furniture is cast, you can’t fold it up and set it aside.
